The government should control the amount of violence in films and on television
order to decrease the level of violent crime in society. To what extent do you agree
or disagree?
With the huge growth in film, video and online content, and in how and where we can watch and use it, it is becoming more important than ever to provide the audience, especially children with the guidance to help them choose what’s right for them and avoid what’s not. Some people argue that such work need to be done through the government by decreasing the amount of violence in the plots in order to eliminate the violent crime in society. However, from my perspective, it is useless and meaningless for the government to take such measures.
To begin with. the level of violent crime in society is influenced by multiple factors, the content in movies and television is not the only driver. Based on social science studies, violent crime is positively related with the unemployment rate, the fabric of society, the legal system and the average education level. In other words, even if a government control the amount of violence in films, while leave these aspects weakly governaned, the violent crime rate will still be high. Therefore, it is less functioned by decreasing the violence shots in video to reduce violent crime.
Furthermore, numerous crude and bloody plots are developed from the reality, such as the war and other historical events. The arts work, documentary for example, is the precious record of the history, which is useful for us to learn the lesson from past and meaningful for our next generation to understand the current age. Although this content may be violent, they should not be removed.
In fact, compared with the government screening each piece of work and directly cut the content, there are more effective and efficient ways to regulate the substance of entertainment industry. For instance, Netflix has been given the official green light from Britain’s independent film regulatory agency to start setting its own age ratings for its films and television series. In this way, the government relocate its authority to the company itself, not only providing proper guidance to audience but also flourishing the industry.
In conclusion, the content in films or TV shows should be properly guided, but not controlled and determined by the government.
