The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy, and Portugal between 1987 and 2007. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The graph depicts the changing trends in average emissions of carbon dioxide in four countries over a period of 40 years from 1967 to 2007. Despite varying increasing and decreasing trends, total average emissions reduced by 2007. The United Kingdom and Sweden experienced decreasing trends, while Italy and Portugal recorded mostly increasing trends.

In 1967, UK's emissions were at about 11 metric tonnes and after experiencing a steady decline, ended at about 8.5 metric tonnes in 2007, while remaining the highest emitter of CO2. Sweden, the second highest emitter in 1967, started at about 8.5 metric tonnes, experienced a dramatic rise in emissions, and peaked in 1977 at about 10.5 metric tonnes, after which emissions rapidly dropped to about 5 metric tonnes by 2007.

Italy started out as the third highest carbon emitter, at about 4.5 metric tonnes, and after a steady increase in emissions, had attained the same level of emissions as Sweden by 1987. It overtook Sweden to become the second highest emitter by 2007 and narrowed the gap with the UK.

On the other hand, Portugal, despite its upward trend, maintained its relatively low emissions among the four countries. It started out at 1.5 metric tonnes in 1967 and by 2007 had tripled to about 4.5 metric tonnes, very nearly the same level as Sweden's emissions.
