The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant

The line graph compares the proportion of goods delivered by four different means of transport in the UK from 1974 to 2002.
Overall, it is clear that the expenditure on road was higher than on the other three modes. However, the quantities of goods shipped by those modes increased throughout the period shown, despite fluctuations.
In 1974, nearly 70 million tones of goods were moved by road, compared to about 5 million tones via pipeline. The number of goods for water and rail was similar in the same year, at roughly 39 million and exactly 40 million respectively. Despite some minor fluctuations, transporting goods on road continued to rise significantly to almost 98 million at the end, which was the highest point of the whole graph.
There was a steadily upward trend on water and pipeline, and reached a figure of over 60 million and approximately 22 million tones respectively in 2002. By contrast, goods transported by rail remained relatively static at roughly 40 million tones over the period of 28 years
