The pie chart below shows the main reasons why agricultural land becomes less productive. The table shows how these causes affected three regions of the world during the 1990s.

The charts show the percentage of agricultural land damage on various reasons in worldwide, and also three main regions, including North America, Europe, and Oceania, during the 1990s.

Looking firstly at worldwide statistical pie chart, we see that the highest area of land degradation is over-grazing, at 35%. It is followed closely by deforestation which is 5% and less than overgrazing, followed by over-cultivation at 28%. All other minor reasons are mentioned as ‘other’ and constituted 7% loss of land fertility.

Regarding three agricultural regions, we see that at deforestation is the main land destroyed factor in Europe (9.8%), and reaching it to the worst in comparison with other regions. However, in North America and the Oceania, farmlands were impacted by others main reasons, over-cultivation (3.3%) and over-grazing (11.3%) respectively. Interestingly, over-cultivation had no effect on Australia, New Zealand, and islands in the South Pacific.

In conclusion, in 1990, Europe faced the problem of land degradation. The main cause behind it was deforestation, while it was considered as the second impact in worldwide analysis.
