The table indicates information about how many visitors used three major British airports over the six-year period, from 1998 to 2003. The figures are given in millions.
Overall, it is interesting to note that there was a upward trend in the number of passengers who chose Heathrow, Gatwick or Stansted airport. Besides, what stands out from the table is that except in 2000, travellers who used Gatwick airport were much more popular than two remaining airport.
Looking at the detail, as regards the number of travellers using Gatwick airport, it started at 36,5 million, which was the highest proportion in 1998. Subsequently, the figure was followed by a steady and considerable increase to reach a high of 69,3 million in 2003.
If we looking at Heathrow airport, the number of passengers began at 27,2 million. There was a sharp rise by 21 million in 2000 before keeping in a gradual decrease to just 33,2 million in 2002, which meant that in 2000, a higher number of travellers used it than other airports. At this point, the figure recovered to become the second popular airport among three ones in 2003 (45,6 million). As for the figure of Stansted airport, the number of people who used it climbed sharply in the first three years, from 17,3 million in 1998 to 39,9 million in 2000. Having a significant rise to 43,3 million in 2001, the figure the remained stable.
