Write a report for a university lecturer describing the changes which occurred.

The pie charts compares the proportion of different types of power consumed by American in the 1980s and the 1990s.

In general, the main sources of energy underwent some significant changes over a ten-year period with the first rank belonging to oil and the last one for hydroelectric power.

The most dramatic alteration occurred in the oil consumption, from 42% to 33% in a decade. Despite the decline of almost 10%, it still took the first place in both charts. Ranking after oil, natural gas experienced a stable consumption, accounting for around a quarter of power supply. Regarding the last three kinds, hydroelectric power remained the same over the time frame whereas others both witnessed a moderate change. Coal, holding the third-popular source of energy, grew considerably from 22% to 27%, accounting for more than a quarter in the 1990s. Similarly, the percentage of nuclear power seen a minimal rise by 5%.

To sum up, while the two most common sources of energy dropped at different rate, the other three experienced a positive trend over 10 years.
