The graph below shows changes in global food and oil prices between 2000 and 2011.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

You should write at least 150 words.

The given line graph depicts the changes in the prices of food and oil worldwide from 2000 to 2011.

Overall, despite their fluctuation several times, both of these two items experienced an upward trend for the first 8 years, followed by an upturn during the last 3 years in the examined period.

As can be seen from the graph, starting at about 92 points in the index, the global price of food remained stable from around 80 to 100 points over the 2000 to 2004 period. Then, there was a gradual increase in the points of food in the next 2 years, amounting to over 150 points in the late 2006, followed by a moderate decline in 2007 and a sharp rise to over 220 points in the middle of 2008. After a plunge to its lowest point at under 120 points in 2009, the food price rise again to over 180 points in 2011.

The same trend was observed with the average oil price in the world. With only 20$ per barrel in 2000, the oil price saw a significant increase up to over 120$ per barrel. It then witnessed an increase to over 50 $ before gaining the increase again to its peak at nearly 140$ in 2011
