Essay topics:

The graphs below show the numbers of male and female workers in 1975 and 1995 in several employment sectors of the Republic of Freedonia.

The bar graphs illustrates how many men and women work in six different sectors in the Republic of Freedonia between 1975 and 1995.

It is clear that in 1975 all six employment sectors are dominated by men. Some significant changes could be seen in the communications and wholesale and retail sale in the following two decades.

In 1975, 250,000 women worked in communications compared to 300,000 of men. The same gender gap could be seen in banking finance and wholesale and retail trade which witnessed differences of 300,000 and 100,000 respectively. However, in the following twenty years, the number of female communication and wholesale and retail trade employees increased significantly to 600,000 and 800,000 respectively while the figures for male workers in the two sectors hardly changed. Similarly, female bankers are closing the gap with a three-fold increase in employment, making the figures for employees in finance equal in gender terms.

Some striking changes are not seen in the remaining sectors. Men were still overrepresented in contrast to women in manufacturing and public sector (non-defence) with the respective gender employment inequalities of 400,000 and 200,000 workers in both 1975 and 1995. The same goes for the public sector (defence) where there were still 200,000 more men workers than their counterparts of the opposite sex in 1995 despite the rise in the figure for women.
