In an effort to encourage ecologically sustainable forestry practices, an international organization started issuing certifications to wood companies that meet high ecological standards by conserving resources and recycling materials. Companies that rece

The text and the lecture offer two opposing views on the need for ecocertification for American wood companies. While the text lists reasons why American wood companies are not going to after ecocertification, the professor provides several points that American wood companies eventually seek for the label.

First, the professor suggests that not all American consumers have the same perspective on advertising. The text reasons that American consumers do not have much trust in advertising claims. However, the professor points out while some people do not trust company-owned advertising claims, others believe independent consumer agencies, especially organizations with international reputations.

Second, he says price only becomes a factor when the competing products' price is similar. The reading suggests ecocertified wood is more expensive than uncertified ones and the price-oriented American customers prefer cheaper uncertified wood. However, the professor says ecocertified wood only five percent higher in terms of price compared to uncertified wood. With a similar price, Americans rely on other factors. In addition, more Americans have environmental-friendly behavior.

Third, the professor argues that American wood companies should pay attention to foreign competition in the wood business. The text points out international certification is useless because of American wood companies only enter the domestic market. However, the professor counters this by saying if American wood companies do not give much attention, companies from all around the world will enter the American market. The need for certification is not only driven by global competition but also more Americans tend to have greener products.
