Essay topics:

evidence related to the reaching of Peary to the North Pole in 1909

The reading and the lecture are both about the truth of Peary's claim related to the reaching the pole in 1909. The author of the reading believes that there are three ideas which support this claim. However, the lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She thinks that these opinions are not convincing.

First of all, the author points out that the investigation of Natural Geographic Society supports the Peary's claims. It is mentioned that Peary's assertions were persuasive. On the contrary, this point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that examining the Peary's expedition was done by close friends of Peary, so there is a possibility of bias. Furthermore, she suggests that this inspecting took a short period of time; thus, this evidence could not be very strong and convincing.

Secondly, the author contends that results of researches showed that Peary arrived the North Pole in only 37 days. The article notes that although critics rejected this allegation, the journey of the British explorer could support this claim since it took less than 37 days. In contrast, the lecturer rebuts this argument. She argues that Avery's trip was different from Peary's expedition. She elaborates on this by mentioning that Avery did not carry any foods and he got them from airplanes. Additionally, the condition weather was favorable through his trip.

Finally, the author states that there are photos which can confirm the Peary's claims. The article establishes that assessing shadows in photographs can detect the position of the sun at that time in the North Pole. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that Peary's images are not enough clear to calculate shadows and to identify the sun’s position. She puts forth the idea that cameras which Peary used were primitive, so they have provided blurry pictures.
