Both the reading and the lecture try to discuss an ancient European silver coin that was discovered at a Native American site in the state of Maine. While the author states that the coin is not a genuine historical evidence, but a fake one, and brings some ideas to support this claim, the speaker finds all these ideas dubious and brings some evidence to refute them all.
First, the reading argues that this coin was found far away from the Norse settlements. This fact firmly supports the claim that this coin does not belong to the Europeans who came to the North America. On the other hand, the lecturer plays up the idea that these are some other ancient objects that were found in distant places .In addition, the Norse settlements were interested in discovering far places, and finding new objects.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that there were no other coins found in that area owing to the fact that; actually, these Europeans did not bring any coin to the United States with themselves, accordingly, these coins cannot support any historical issue. In contrast, the professor brings the idea that The Norse did not create any permanent settlements for themselves. They took coins to the United States , and packed them up when they went back to Europe, therefore it is obvious why scientists could not find any other coins in that region.
Last but not least, the reading passage states that the Native Americans did not recognize these coins as valuable objects or money, thus the Norse did not bring them with themselves, since they were useless. Conversely, the speaker dismisses all these ideas due to the fact that these coins were not used as money. The Americans loved them for their beauty. They made jewelry and neckless with them. This assertion proves the usefulness of these coins and their genuine presence in the Maine state.
