Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific theories presented in the reading passage

In the reading passage, the author claims the three main cause of the extinction of steller's sea cow (a kind of sea cow lived in the water off the coast of Siberia). On the other hand, the professor closely examines each of three reasons and reveals that the reasons rely on doubtful assumptions which render the argument unconvincing. According to him, we still do not know the exact reason of Stelle's sea cow extinction.

Firstly, the author points out that since sea cows were good sources of food in a harsh environment, they may have been overhunted by the natives of Serbian people. However, the lecturer views this point from an another angle and explains that the Steller's sea cows were quite enormous animals with 9 meters long. On the other hand, the population of Siberian area was small and thus, they didn't need a lot of sea cows for their food. Considering this point, overhunting would not be an effective reason for extinction.

Secondly, the writer claims that the disturbances of ecosystems have caused a decline in the sea cows’ main source of food, kelp. Therefore, the shortage of the food was responsible for the extinction of sea cows in 1768. On the other hand, the lecturer definitely refutes this point by saying that if the disturbances of ecosystems have happened, they would affect other marine animals. But, the evidence shows that other marine animals’ decline did not happen. For example, the wheels population were not declined at that time although, it was a marine animal.

Finally, the writer mentions that arriving European fur trader after 1741 was the main reason for sea cows’ extinction. The professor opposes this point by saying that population of sea cows was declining for hundreds of years. The European fur trader just arrived the island when the population of sea cows was quite small. Thus, the reason which led to a decrease in sea cow's population started from many years ago should be regarded as the culprit of sea cows extinction, not the appearance of European at the last a few years.
