Toward the end of his life, the Chevalier de Seingalt (1725-1798) wrote a long memoir recounting his life and adventures. The Chevalier was a somewhat controversial figure, but since he met many famous people, including kings and writers, his memoir has b

The text and the lecture give contrasting views on the reliability of Chevalier’s memoir. The text suggests that the memoir is an inaccurate document while the professor, on the other hand, thinks that the memoir is an accurate record. The professor provides counter-arguments on each idea presented in the reading.

Firstly, the author says that Chevalier is not wealthy at all because he thinks Chevalier borrowed a significant amount of money for parties and gambling. However, the professor says that his wealthiness comes in the form of property and this requires few days to exchange into the cash form. The professor suggests this is why he needs to borrow some money while waiting for his property converted into cash.

Secondly, the reading states that it is not possible for Chevalier to record the conversation between him and Voltaire. The author feels its account is not precise because it would have been impossible for Chevalier to memorize all of their conversations many years after the initial meeting. However, the professor counters this idea by saying that Chevalier recorded his conversations directly after the occurrence. In addition, he often regularly consulted his conversations.

Finally, the text suggests that Chevalier account's of him escaping a prison is not accurate. Instead, the author thinks he has strong political friends that help him to bribe guards in the well-known prison. On the other hand, the professor responds that prisoners with stronger political allies cannot bribe their way for freedom and thus it is impossible for Chevalier to escape with this particular method. Instead, the professor says Chevalier's account is accurate because soon after he escaped, the jailers had the ceilling hole fixed.
