TPO-03 - Integrated Writing Task Rembrandt is the most famous of the seventeenth-century Dutch painters. However, there are doubts whether some paintings attributed to Rembrandt were actually painted by him. One such painting is known as attributed to Rem

Both the article and the lecture discusses about the paintings of famous Dutch painter Rembrandt. This discussion focuses on some doubtful paintings, attributed to him specially the one named "Portrait of an Elderly Woman in White Bonnet". The author presents different doubtful aspects of the painting however the professor counters them with detailed analysis and example.

First the writer doubts about the details of the painting, for which Rembrandt was well known for, specially the contrast of a cheap white linen cap with the luxurious fur collar. On the other hand the professor states that the fur collar has been added about 100 years after the original painting was made, mainly to increase the value of the painting by presenting a aristocrat woman in it. In the actual painting there was a light colour cloth instead of a pricy fur collar which completely fullfils the details normally seen in Rembrandt paintings.

Secondly this also clarifies the confusion around the painter's maestry of light and shadow. As the author says the light coming from below illuminating the lady's face should not as such due to the dark coloured fur collar. AS the professor says instead of the dark collar, a light coloured cloth which was actually in the real painting can make this face illumination possible.

Finally, Rembrandt is known for making his painting on a single piece of wood which was not the case in this particular one. The writer supports this with the evidence of glue lines at the back of the painting. However the professor clarifies this was done when the fur collar was added to the original painting to make the painting more grand looking and hence valuable. Moreover the Rembrandt has painted his "Self portrait in Hat" on a piece of wood from the same tree which has been originally used in this painting.

So this is clearly observed here that the professors refutes all the claims made by the article hence proves the painting was originally made by Rembrandt.
