both article and lecture are about salvage logging which is removing dead trees after a severe firing in forests, especially in the northwestern United states. The author of the reading believes that eliminating dead trees through the forest will benefit both forest and economy and supplies three reasons to endorse the theory. The lecturer challenges this statement and refutes each reason declared in the passage, as elaborated upon hereunder.
What tops the chart, the author proposes that the unanimated trees will occupy the forest and it takes a long time to decompose, and as a result, new trees cannot grow in the region. this claim is disputed by the lecturer. she states that cleaning up the forest is not necessary, it destroys the natural process of the jungle. Furthermore, the dead trees will be decomposed which enrich the soil with plenty nutrients which are requirement for growth of jungle's vegetation.
Equally important, the writer contends that the dead trees provide thriving conditions for insects which enormously destroy the other live trees. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by asserting that the idea is totally controversial, insects not only are not harmful for these habitats, but also they have lived there for a long time which they have passed their natural live. Additionally, the dead trees can provide home for many inhabitants in the jungle like birds and other kinds of animals.
Last but not least, it is stated in the article that the salvage logging benefits economy largely. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the advantage of this process is small which cannot be considered a long economic situation. she brings forth the idea that the logs through harsh condition of the jungle cannot easily be exploited and they are only usable when some expensive and advanced vehicles like helicopter implemented to gather them. As well, the jobs which provide through this procedure are not long-lasting, so salvage logging cannot be lucrative for the economy and people.
