Consistent decline has been noticed in the population of yellow cedar tree across northwestern North America since 1880, which is for more than a century now. Several hypothesis have been put forward by many people accounting for the declining yellow cedar tree.
First hypothesis states that attack by bettles have poised a great threat to the cedar tree, especially it's larvae on the tree and is responsible for the decreasing cedar tree population.
Another key factor or hypothesis contributing to the above loss is the brown bear species. Brown bear species clawing is responsible to destruction of yellow cedar tree surface and barks.
Last or third reason is the change in climatic pattern or temperature over the last hundered years. The cedar tree has fine growing roots which is expected to grow by the early spring time but a drastic change has been noticed over time, resulting in the growth of cedar tree roots by late winters. As a result, leaving them half frozen and more prone to damage or finally leading it to the killing of entire tree.
Inspite of various thesis, the killing of tree remains unexplained today due to various contradicting statements as well as facts. Yellow cedar trees are more resistent to insects as compared to other tree species, their barks are very much poisonous for bettle or any other insect species to attack on. And, bettles attack usually destroyed trees only. So, the question of bettle attack affecting tree remains unanswered. Secondly, these trees are normally found off the coast in mainland or on island and island does not have bears. Hence, presence of bear or it's absence cannot contribute to the decline of trees, as the number is still decreasing. Furthermore, root suffering cannot be a reason because many trees die during cold chilling winters in high elevation whereas cedar is still in low elevation areas.
Thereby, the reason of decline still remains a mystery but hopefully will be resolved in the upcoming time with bettre theory concepts.
