The main topic of both the reading passage and the lecture is about an ingenious weapon called 'burning mirror' which was made by the Greeks. The passage shows doubts about the existence of the burning mirror whereas the lecture provides evidences of it.
First, the passage claims that the ancient Greeks were not technologically that advance to make a parabolic curvature weapon. Besides, it would need a large sheet of copper to built it which did not exist then. However, the the lecturer opposes by pointing out that it would need a dozen of small pieces of copper to build a parabolic shape large mirror. She added that the ancient Greeks knew the techniques to build a long copper mirror from those small pieces.
Second, the passages says that it would take long enough time to burn a ship through burning mirror as the ship is a moving object. The lecturer refutes the saying by pointing out that the Roman boats were not only made of wood, they were made of a oject called peach which can be easily set on fire.
Finally, the passage shows that shooting flaming arrows was more effective weapon than burning mirror for the Greeks. Therefore, there was no reason for the Greeks to use burning mirror instead of flaming arrows. The lecturer disagrees with the point by saying that shooting flaming arrows would not be a surprising thing for the Romans and they could be alert of them. On the other hand, burning a ship through a mirror could be an unknown fact for the Romans. That is the reason Greeks used burning mirror to attack their enemies instead of flaming arrows.
