TPO-31 - Integrated Writing Task A fossil skeleton of a dinosaur called Sinosauropteryx, preserved in volcanic ash, was discovered in Liaoning, China, in 1996. Interestingly, the fossil included a pattern of fine lines surrounding the skeletal bones. Some

In view of the reading, the author enumerates that this is impossible to Sinosauropteryx had feathers by pointing out three reasons of support by studying their fossil skeleton. Finding the statements arguable, the lecturer casts doubt on the claim made by the article and presents pieces of evidence in contrary.

At first, the author argues that the line on the Sinosauropteryx is not a symbol of functional structure of living dinosaurs and they had been created after the Sinosauropteryx's death by decomposing their skin to fibers. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that there is no record for decomposing for the fossile of other known animals which buried in volcanic ash. They maintain complete and it could not be a good idea for the basis of these lines.

In addition, the reading passage holds the view that there is a chance that this line was related to the frills, the ornamental fan-shaped structure which many dinosaurs had. On the other hand, the lecturer disputes this point by clarifying the fact that there is a chemical difference between the frills and feathers and the frills do not have Betacarotene. By recent research, it has been shown that there are some Betacarotene in the Sinosauropteryx's fossils which shows they could have feathers.

Finally, the author asserts the backbone and tail which most of the lines located on them as the last point for supporting that this structure could be useless and there is no chance to consider flight ability for the Sinosauropteryx. The lecturer, though, dismisses it by elucidating that the feather is not just for the regulation of the temperature or fly, they could have used for other function like pick up. Also, the lecturer says that the researcher found some colorful things which could be a sign of having the feathers.
