TPO 31- Task 1

The reading passage states that a fossil skeleton of a dinosaur named Sinosauropteryx, which well preserved in volcanic ash, included a pattern of fine lines. The passage comments that although these lines indicate that these dinosaurs had feathers, some critics have contradicted the idea by preparing some reasons of support. The lecturer, meanwhile, casts serious doubts on the presented ideas and believes that there are several strong evidence these lines are the sign of feathers.
First, the passage asserts that the fine lines might be formed after the animal's death by the decomposition of their skin into fibers and the skin fiber then misinterpreted as evidence of feathers. The professor, on the other hand, makes the argument that these fine lines are not caused due to the decomposition. She believes that according to their excavations at the same site, other animals did not represent the decomposition process on their body parts. In fact, all their bodies beautifully preserved. Thus, by comparing with other same dinosaurs, they concluded that these lines are the sign of the feathers.
Second, the reading passage declares that these lines surrounding the skeleton are much more likely to be the remains of frills, while the professor disagrees and says that there are some differences in the chemical composition of the frill and feather. She mentions that frills do not contain the particular protein that is present the feathers. Hence, as these structures, based on their experiments, did not comprise of any particular protein, they resulted that it might be feathers.
Finally, the reading passage claims that since the lines in the Sinosauropteryx fossils were mostly located along the backbone and the tail of the animal, they cannot be feathers. In contrast, the lecturer posits that there are some birds named peacocks with the same structure. These birds use their colorful tail, which is orange and white, to attract their mate and it has a displaying functionality. She thinks that the same structure in the Sinosauropteryx may foster the idea that these feathers were for displaying rather than flying.
