The reading provides three different reasons for extinction of sea cows, the enormous marine animal which lived in the water next to the coast of Siberia. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First, the author argues that over hunting of this huge animal by the Siberian people could be the main cause of this problem. Conversely, the lecturer casts doubt on this idea by stating that sea cow was a huge animal with 9 meter long and over 10 tones weight, so, Siberian people did not need to kill all of them for their food and a couple of them could provide the food of these people for months.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that changing the ecosystems factors and whether conditions might cause this extinction. In the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that if the ecosystems disturbance were so sever, it could have affected other animal’s population and created some sort of problems for them. However, the researchers showed that the population of other animals did not change in this area. As a result, this could not be the source of the problem.
Finally, the reading asserts that European sailors who hunt this animal for its precious fur could be the main reason of this extinction. In contrast, the speakers dismisses this issue due to the fact that when the European traders reached this area the population of this animal has been already declined. He also states that some evidence clearly depict that the population of this animal was much more greater 100 years before arriving of the European people, but, because of unknown reason it decreased tremendously after that. So, whatever this thing was, it should be considered as the main cause of this huge extinction.
