Both the reading and the lecture try to discuss causes of the Little Ice Age. While the reading brings 3 causes and adds some information about them, the lecturer finds all these ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First, the author argues that during the warm weather period before the Ice Age, a huge amount of glaciers melted and increased the level of cold fresh water in the Gulf Stream. These ocean currents may have disruptes the Gulf Stream, temporarily, as a result of this occurrence, the Little Ice Age took place in that time. In contrast, the lecturer plays up with the idea that the disruption caused cool climates only in the Northern Hemisphere Continents like America and Europe. The climate did not decline in places like sought Africa, so the disruption of ocean currents did not cause the Ice Age period, definitely.
Furthermore, the reading passage hold the view that a number of volcanic eruptions took place during the Little Ice Age, and they caused this period by producing dusts and emitting them into the atmosphere. This action decreased the global warming phenomenon, and the climate became cooler. Conversely, the speaker states that the clouds of dust were not strong and adequate enough to cause this period due to the fact that there were no submitted reports of the visual effects of these cloudy clouds of dust like a colorful sunset or a gray or brown snowfall.
Last but not least, the reading asserts that the decrease in human population led to the growth of the forest trees instead of agricultural crops, accordingly, these trees absorbed carbon dioxide and removed it from the atmosphere. This occurrence conducted the weather to become cooler because the greenhouse effect declined. In contrast, the speaker brings up some evidence that with the huge increase in the human population after that period, people grew crops in these fields fairly quickly and the trees were not there long enough to cause this Little Ice Age.
