The reading and the lecture both discuss whether electronic records is an appropriate replacement for paper records or not. The reading says that by using electronic databases, doctors can reduce costs, reduce errors and help researchers. However, the lecture states that although using the electronic records may have some positive consequences, it has some negative effects as well.

First, the costs of storing will fall down. According to the reading, doctors can save money by applying electronic databases, because these records do not need space to storing. Moreover, they can transfer electronic databases easily. In contrast, the professor says that the doctors in addition to the electronic storing, need to keep patients records backupa; hence, the costs are going to increase automatically.

In addition, decreases errors in records. The passage states that because of bad handwriting, nonstandard papers and so forth, these causes several errors during the storing process, then by using electronic way all errors will eliminate. However, the speaker claims that almost all doctors use paper records, and it requires much time to shifting from paper to electronic records. Moreover, writing the electronic records from last paper records inherently cause some errors.

Finally, the researchers can easily achieve a source for researches by using the patients’ electronic records. The reading states that there are a great deal of electronic information that researchers are able to apply in the research process. On the other hand, the lecture refutes this advantages and says that if the researchers want to use the patients’ information, they should obtain many permits.
