University tuition fees are increasing. Some argue that higher education should be made free. To what extent do you agree?

Over the past years, whether university tuition fees should be made free has sparked a heated debate. Although contested by some that over reliance of government funds for university tuition can cause serious problems, such issue is regarded thoroughly both positive and constructive by a number of individuals. In my opinion, I believe that this idea of government allocating more funds to university tuition fees is the most valued. However, higher education should not be made completely free as the quality of education would suffer and resources shortage would soon intensify.

To begin with, university requires more funds to attract talented and bright students. Leading universities in the world often provide top students scholarships and various benefits. For instance, university of new South Wales increases its tuition fees every semester in order to provide prizes, hold competitions and improve its student accommodation for excellent students. Therefore, increasing tuition plays a vital role in the college’s development.

However, governments should not bear the entire cost of higher education but create new ways of sharing cost and benefits. According to one of my research which I conducted in university, 76% of students agree to pay higher tax once they graduated from university and worked in the field which they studied. Hence, if your income does contribute from university studies, it is reasonable and acceptable to pay back the society. In this case, tuition fee can become cheaper, so not only the wealthiest can access university, but everyone else who wants to be educated.

In conclusion, higher education tuition should be made affordable to all excellent students from various financial backgrounds. Government shall change the policies to encourage those benefited from university education pay back to the society, further help university’s development and reduce tuition for all.
