Governments should focus on solving the immediate problems of today rather than on trying to solve the anticipated problems of the future.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.
The role of the government in a modern nation is essentially that of the problem solver. It is an elected bodieswhich is put into place, with the expectation to solve the problems faced by the nation's citizens.Such problems comprise both present issues and the issues which may occur in future, both near and distant.Any government with a resonanble hope of staying in power to complete its term has to address the major current issues. However, for a nation to do sustained progress,it is essential that the government while focusing on solving present day issues, does not overlook the anticipated problems of future completely.
A glaring example of governments' overlooking the anticipated future problem for the sake of solving today's issues is the damage to environment and global warming. The industrial revolution was started in various nations to solve the people's economic problems, cater to their day-to-day needs, providing employment and raising the overall standards of life.
The industrail revolution began in Europe and soon spread all over the world as nation after nation joined the blind run of industrial development and superiority. However,in the race of achieving this shorter term goal, the governments in major part of the twentieth century failed to address the future issue of environmental damage. Large scale deforestation took place all over the planet to feed the demand of fuel in the industries and that of timber to build the residential places for the growing population.Earth has been emptied of a large part of its mineral wealth. In the past hundred years, the earth's forest cover has reduced much more than it was till the onset of twentieth century. Today,we are living in a world with the threat of global warming, ozone layer hole, vast changes in climates of nations, dangerously rising sea levels which have the potential of eradicating entire coutries, flash floods, increasing desertification and many other such dangers. These are a direct result of industrial revolution which has caused deforestation and is responsible for emission of green house gases in earth's atmosphere. This problem was created by the governments' short term goal of industrail revolution even if the consequence
Another example of governments' disregard to future problems is creation of social divides in nations.Every nation has some classes of people which are weaker due to historical, religious, cultural or socio-economic reasons. Some examples of weaker classes are the lower castes and non Hindu ethnic minorities in India and the coloured population in South Africa nad much of western world. The governments inorder to secure the vote bank of such classes which may be more in number, start providing them perks like reservations in education, jobs etc. To an extent it is required to bring the weaker sections into social mainstream, however the governments mostly pay complete disregard to the fact that their should be grassroot level development to uplift such weaker classes. This has especially been the case in South East Asia and has only resulted in such classes getting more dependent on perks rather than uplifting themselves through better education and other fascilities provided. This presents the danger of creating a major social divides between these classes and the so called stronger factions.
Summing up,the governments have the duty of addressing the current problems, but in doing so they should not pay complete disregard to the problems of future. However attention should be paid to the c\visible problems like global warming and not on whimsiacl ones like a nation spending its budget to build defence systems for stopping alien attackjs from oputer space.Only then the nations and world can do real progress.
