Overall, it can be seen that, in 2040 Japan is predicted to overtake the figures of Sweden and USA. Also, in 2040 Sweden will have more elderly population than America.
To begin, in 1940, the proportion of people aged 65 and over stood at around 10% and 7% in USA and Sweden. The figures for these countries rose during the period and in 2000 the values stood was around 15%(USA) and 12%(Sweden). After this point, the figures of USA will remain stable until 2020, before reaching a peak of about 23% in 2040. Whereas, for the sweden the percentage will decline to around 18% in 2025, before rocketing to 25% in 2040, overtaking USA.
In the case of Japan, only 5% of people were aged 65 and over in 1940. This figure declined gradually and reached around 5% again in 2000. However after this point, the percentage rose dramatically and by 2040, the proportion of older people in Japan will reach around 28%, overtaking Sweden and America.
