The given bar graph illustrates the contrasting trends in the number of films rented and sold from 2002 to 2011 on a yearly basis. It can be observed from the graph that there appears to be a shift in consumer behavior over the past years with sales being favored over rentals of films.
Firstly, DVD sales started out in 2002 with a modest number of close to 50000 but emerged as the format with the highest sales over the years by registering a sharp increase to above 200000 by 2007, which was followed by a gradual decrease. In contrast to this, the number of films rented continued to decline over the years consistently and the film rentals in 2011 had come down to less than half of its numbers in 2002.
On the other hand, VHS and Blu-ray sales, which occupy a minor proportion of total annual sales present unique results. VHS sales had more number of films sold than DVD in 2002 but eventually faded out in 2006, after a sharp plummet. However, sales of Blu-ray films started in 2007 and continued to grow steadily.
To sum up, the annual number of films sold or rented at the store reflects the changing preference of users with more people opting for sales compared to rentals. Among this trend, DVD sales remain the most sought after format of films with Blu-ray sales slowly picking up the pace.
