The chart compares the sales of 4 game categories on the global scale between 2000 and 2006.
Overall, while the sale volume of handheld, mobile phone, and online games saw a consistent increase, that of console one was reversed.
Handheld games dominated the game market in the period shown. Achieving a massive level at approximately $12bn in 2000, their sales grew gradually to just under $18bn in 2006.
Despite later appearance, online and mobile games experienced the fastest growth. Entering the market in 2002, during the following 4 years, the sales of the latter outnumbered that of the former, which has the first sales in 2001 at nearly 1bn. However, the position changed after the sales of mobile games soared to $9bn in 2006, roughly $2bn higher than that of online ones.
By contrast, console games did not follow a similar pattern. Despite their popularity in the first four years, their sales decreased consistently to half of their starting point at nearly $6bn in 2000, making them the least common in 2005 and 2006.
