The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
The bar chart illustrates the proportion of families living in purchased and leased properties in two countries, namely England and Wales, between 1918 and 2011.
Overall, the rates of households in owned accommodation were much lower than the rented one during the first half of the period, with a shift in 1981 when owned accommodation topped the chart.
Looking at the chart, from 1918 to 1961, it is noticeable that the percentages of families in leased houses were higher than the other figure, ranging from 77% to 59% throughout the period. Meanwhile, there was a gradual increase in the proportion of installed accommodation, starting with 22% in 1918 and culminating with 41% in 1961. In 1971, the two figures shared the same rates with exactly 50% each, making it the most remarkable feature. From 1981 to 2011, the proportion of households in owned properties superseded the remaining group, with the data ranging from 60 to 70 percent. On the other hand, the rates of families staying in rented accommodation continued to drop gradually, ending at approximately 36% in 2011.
