The first bar graph illustrates the number of marital union and divorces in the USA from 1970 to 2000. The second chart gives information about the civil status of American adults in 1970 and 2000.
Overall, the number of marriages in the United States is steadily declining over the given period. Similarly, the number of couples divorcing is also going down with some fluctuation. In 1970, there are more people getting married than in 2000. In contrast, more marriage ended in divorce in 2000 than in 1970. There were also more people whose chose not to get married in 2000 than in 1970, while the percentage of widowed people are almost the same between the 2 years.
In 1970 and 1980, about 2.5 million people got married, however by 1990, this number started to decline and by 2000, it hits its lowest at 2 million. Divorce, on the other hand, was 1 million in 1970 then rose up to about 1.5 million in 1980 but started to go down in 1990 and by 2000, the number went back to 1 million.
In 1970, about 15% of American adults remained single, but in 2000, this percentage went up to 20%. In contrast, marriages in 1970 were at 70% but dipped down to 60% in 2000. The divorce rate was at approximately 2% in1970 then rose to almost 10% 30 years after. The number of widowed Americans remained constant at about 10% in 1970 and 2000.
