The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
The first chart illustrates the variation in percentage of households owning electrical appliances from 1920 to 2019 and second one demonstrates the change in number of hours of household works done per week in those respective time period. In general, it can be concluded that as percentage of households increased the usage of electrical appliances, the number of hours invested in performing the housework has decreased.
Specifically, it is seen that the proportion of houses using refrigerator has increased rapidly from 1920 to 1980 and probably culminated during that period. Similarly, the use of vacuum cleaner also has clearly reached its maximum in 2000. The percentage of utilization of washing machine has also increased from 40% to about 75% during the time span of 1920 to 2019 but it is gradual and less rapid than the increment of refrigerator and vacuum cleaner. Furthermore, the number of hours to do house works per week such as washing, preparing meals and cleaning has reduced from 50 hours to 10 hours per week. We could credit this decrease to the corresponding increase in electrical appliances' usage but other reasons could also have played some role in it.
In an interesting note, a small decrease of 10 % is seen in the usage of washing machine from 1960 to 1980 while other two electrical appliances saw their increment steeply. However, the decrease in time to perform household works is seen in the usual proportion during this period. So, it could be inferred that use of washing machine did not have any significant role in the reduction of time invested in house works in comparison to electrical appliances mentioned in the chart.
