The two line graphs illustrate the proportion of electric appliances (washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner) in each household and the hours spent doing the housework every week for a decade from 1920 to 2019 in a nation.
Overall, it has been observed that all three equipment were owned over the time with refrigerator and vacuum cleaner being in the lead. On the contrary, the time spent on housework was seen to decline during this period.
According to the first chart, in 1920 both washing machine and vacuum cleaner was owned by 40% and 30% of the families respectively whereas the number of refrigerator was slightly above 0%. In the first 4 decades, there was a rise in number of refrigerator by 50% in 1940 and by 40% in 1960, while the amount of vacuum cleaner rose steadily by 20% in 1940 and 1960. The percentage increase in laundry machine was 20% in 1940 and was halved by 1960. 1n 1980, there was a dip in the number of washing machine and the count of refrigerators had reached 100% whereas the percentage for vacuum cleaners continued to rise until 2000. Both the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner reached a plateau after 2000 and the amount of washing machine rose gradually.
However, with the ownership of the appliances the time required for housework reduced significantly from 50% in 1920 to 20% in 1960 after which the decline was steady. A slight dip was observed after 2000 where the number of hours was just above 10.
