The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The picture illustrates the process of electricity production in a hydroelectric power station. Its operation begins when river water flows into the high-level reservoir and concludes when electricity is sent to the national grid.
Overall, there are two parts to this operation, which work day and night, with the daytime generation encompassing power production and dam water restoration. The water flows in the reverse direction at night, towards the river and the first reservoir.
Water is transported into a high-level reservoir that is backed up by a dam during the day portion of the operation. Surprisingly, directly beneath the dam, there is an intake area that is open during the day and closed at night. During the day, water flows into the power station, which contains a generator, mainly the reversible turbines, which generate electric energy. Consequently, that electric product is sent to the national grid through power lines, while the excess water falls into the low-level reservoir, restarting the process.
During the night, water stored in the lower reservoir is reverted through the turbines of the power station and is pumped back into the high-level reservoir which is closed at night. Then, the river water from the upper level flows down, begins the cycle again.
