The graph illustrates the average amount of CO2 emissions per unit of population in four countries including the United Kingdom, Italy, Sweden and Portugal, which were produced over 40 years from 1967 to 2007. Units are measured in metric tonnes.
Overall, the British pumped the most amount of CO2 into the air over period given, while for Sweden, which used to rank just below the UK at the first half of the period, released the least amount of CO2 in the last year. In contrast, there was a steady increase in the emissions produced by Italy and Portugal over 40 years.
First of all, the CO2 released by the British was decrease moderately from under 11 to around 9 metric tonnes between 1967 and 2007. With regards to the emissions Sweden released, it began at almost 9 metric tonnes and then peaked at above 10 metric tonnes in 1977 before falling dramatically to nearly 5 metric tonnes in the final years.
In contrast, the amount of CO2 emissions was risen substantially in both Italy and Portugal over 40 years, as shown in the growth from marginally above 4 metric tonnes to slightly under 8 metric tonnes and from approximately 1 metric tonne to about 5 metric tonnes respectively.
