The line graph depicts the number of older people at the age of 65 and above from three nations including Japan, Sweden and the USA since 1940 and forecasts trends until 2040. The unit is measured in percentage.
Overall, it is evident that all figures for the elderly in the surveyed countries have experienced an upward trend and are predicted to keep rising in the future.
As can be seen from the graph, in the year 1940, the percentage of the aging citizens in the USA was 8%, taking a lead among all the countries and being followed by that in Sweden and Japan which were 6% and 5% respectively. During the first 40 years, a slight decrease of 2% was witnessed in the figures for Japan whereas that for the USA and Sweden rose at the identical rate with a gap of 2% each.
The other period observed Sweden surpass the USA in terms of the elderly population in 2000. Besides, in 2020, the proportion of the USA's residents in old age was 15%, twice as many as that of Japan with 7.5%. There is an expectation that Japan would take the lead of the USA in the rate of 65-year-old-and-older country dwellers after a dramatic growth from 8% in early 2020 to 27% in 2040.
