The pie chart below shows the main reasons why agricultural land becomes less productive. The table shows how these causes affected three regions of the world during the 1990s.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The pie chart shows the factors that contribute to land degradation while the table categorizes the causes by region.
From the pie chart, it can be seen that the major criterion that makes the land less productive is over-grazing contributing 35% of the total effect which is followed by deforestation. Destructions of forests impart the second-largest impact on land degradation with a percentage of 30% of the total damage while over-cultivation takes third place in this phenomenon of making soil barren with a fraction of impact of 28 out of 100. Rest 7% is covered by other criteria combined.
The table depicts the condition of land degradation in Three regions: North America, Europe, and Oceania. Europe is mostly hit by deforestation while in other regions the decimation of trees poses a comparatively lower threat. The same is true for excessive cultivation in Europe causing 7.7% of the total damage. North America faces a 3.3% loss in land productivity due to
an excess amount of cultivation, however, in Oceania it seems to be benign. Though Oceania is free from damage done by over-production of crops it takes a huge toll due to herding at an excessive rate. Finally, the last portion of the table tells us that about more than one-fifth of Europe's total land has been damaged and the negative effects are relatively low in the case of North America and Oceania.
