Differences in behaviour regarding transport choices is tabulated for a period spanning fifteen years from 1985 to 2000. The table shows the annual average distances in miles per person that have been travelled, categorised across eight transport modes.
Overall, the total average distance that were covered increased by nearly 50 per cent, where journeys by car account by far for the largest portion of this increase.
In more detail, it is observed that in 1985 the average mileage was 3,199 for travel by car, which had increased to an average of 4,806 miles by 2000. Other modes that showed similar substantial growth were travel by long distance bus, train and taxi as well as all other, non-specified modes of transport.
On the other hand, decreases can be observed for bicycles and walking, which, respectively, decreased from 51 and 255 in 1985 to 41 and 237 average miles in 2000. Contrary to the data for the long distance bus, the data for local bus usage also slumped from 429 to 274 miles.
