Agnostids were a group of marine animals that became extinct about 450 million years ago. Agnostid fossils can be found in rocks in many areas around the world. From the fossil remains, we know that agnostids were primitive arthropods-relatives of modern-day insects. However, the fossil information does not allow paleontologists to determine with certainty what agnostids ate or how they behaved. There are several different theories about how agnostids may have lived.
Free-Swimming Predators
First, the agnostids may have been free-swimming predators that hunted smaller animals. It is known that other types of primitive arthropods were strong swimmers and active predators, so it is reasonable that the agnostids may have lived that way as well And while the agnostids were small, sometimes just six millimeters long, there were plenty of smaller organisms in the ancient ocean for them to prey on.
Seafloor Dwellers
Second, they may have dwelled on the seafloor. Again, there are examples of other types of primitive arthropods living this way, so it is possible that agnostids did too. On the seafloor they would have survived by scavenging dead organisms or by grazing on bacteria.
Parasites
Third, there is the possibility that the agnostids were parasites, living on and feeding off larger organisms. One reason that this seems possible is that there are many species of modern-day arthropods that exist as parasites, such as fleas, ticks, and mites. The agnostids might have lived on primitive fish or even on other, larger arthropods.
Recently, there has been a plethora of debate on Agnostids' life habitant. There are not much information to allow paleontologists to determine with certainty what their food regimes or their bahaviour. More specifically, in regard to the passage, the writer puts forth the idea that there are several different theories about agnostids habitants. In the listening passage, the lecturer is quick to point out that there are some serious flaws in the writer's claims. In fact, the professor believes none of the theories are based on facts that has been founded about agnostids and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.
First and foremost, the author of the article states agnotids may have been free-swimming predators.The writer goes on explaining that because primitive arthropods were active predators, so it is rational the agnotids may have lived that way too. Some professionals in the same field, however, stand in firm opposition to this claim. In the listening, for instance, the professor state it is neccessary for predator spieces to have large eyes and organs that could help them to see and follow their food. She goes on to say that not also agnostids did not have eyes and were actually blind, but also, agnostids did not have suitable organs for hunting.
One group of scholars, represented by the writer, thinks agnostids may have live on the seefloor and come with the idea that they would have survived by eating dead organisms or by grazing on bacteria. Of course, though, not all the experts in the field believe this is accurate. Again, the speaker specifically addresses this point when she points out that see floor animals are very slow and they usually remain in the same area but agnostids are fast animals and their remaining are in a very vast area of the ocean.
Finally, the author brings his argument to a close by suggesting that there is a possibility that these creatures were parasites and they might have lived on other creatures. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that parasite's population is not large and they are feeded from the host animals, although, there are vast and diversed amount of agnostids fossils that indicate their population were large.
To sum up, both the essayist and the professor hold conflicting views about how agnostids lived. It is clear that they will have trouble finding common ground on this issue.
