The article introduces the topic of AIDS, which is one of the dreadful disease which has killed millions of the people in the world. The writer believes that drugs for the AIDS should be cheaper so that the poor people can afford it moreover the AIDS Advocacy groups (AAG) suggests the pharmaceutical companies to take part in it. The lecturer disagrees. He says that lowering the price of the drug might not feasible.
First, the author says that the profit that these big pharmaceutical companies makes are way too high and very insensitive and unethical to utilize money from the poor people for their benefit. The lecturer believes that there are flaws in the author's position. He contends that if the drug companies are unable to make good profit then it might be very difficult for them to even survive. Because, without the profit there would be no investors and without the investors there would be no money which directly leads low production of drugs.
Secondly, author suggests government to pay for drugs because if the government buys the drugs in larger amounts than the price of drug would automatically of go down. The lecturer on the other hand points out that just like the people government of the developing countries have basic economy. So, that the government doesn't have enough money to buy the drugs on larger quantities.
Finally, the reading passage notes how the organization encourages the government of developing countries to make the drugs of its own. The article establishes that it would reduce the shipping cost as well as provide many job opportunities for the poor people. The lecturer rebuts this argument. He says that it is not only unethical to make drugs like that because it is stealing pharmaceutical companies trademark but also plays with the health of people by not focusing on the quality of drug.
As you can see, the author and lecturer holds different point of view on the topic.
