Both the reading and the lecture are about the overhunting of rhinoceroses by poachers because of their horns. While the author of the reading passage proposes some ideas to protect rhinoceroses and prevent poachers from hunting them, the professor disputes the suggested methods. She believes that each solution provided in the text has some weaknesses and flaws.
In the essay, the writer begins by saying that dehorning the rhinoceroses might protect them since they become less attractive to poachers. However, the professor disagrees with this idea. She asserts that dehorning the rhinoceroses is neither practical nor pleasing. Catching rhinoceroses in the wild and preparing them for surgery is so expensive. Besides, rhinoceroses' chances of survival would decrease if their horns were removed. They use their horns to dig for water, break branches for food, and protect their offspring and territory.
Furthermore, according to the article, those people buying rhinoceroses horns should be educated that these horns do not have any use in medicine, and recent research has shown that they are not valuable. On the other hand, the professor points out that educating people is unlikely to be effective. People use rhinoceroses horns as medicine on the ground of their ancient and strong beliefs. There is no chance to change their minds about their old beliefs by providing them with new scientific research and evidence.
Finally, the writer believes that if the government sales the horns that have been taken from the illegal hunters in the market instead of just stockpiling them, the price of rhinoceroses horns will decrease, and poachers will no longer be interested in hunting rhinoceroses. Not surprisingly, the professor refutes this claim by contending that many people do not buy these horns because they are illegal. Under these circumstances, many people would purchase horns, and demand for the horns would increase, which results in raising their price and encouraging poachers to hunt even more rhinoceroses.
To sum up, both the author and the lecturer hold conflicting views on the approaches to protect rhinoceroses from being overhunted.
