colonization on asteroids merit and demerits
Both lecture and the reading article are dicussing about the idea of colonization on asteroids. The lecturer in the lecture is not convincened by the points mentioned in the text and explain in detail each and every point. However, the reading text provides three crucial reasons that how asteroids would be the best option for colonization.
To begin with, the first issue we encounter is with the effects of lower gravity of asteroids on astrounauts. The professor highlights that it is not a valid reason and has some flaws in it. He said that it is not a practical and have seroius downside. ALso, it comes with some risks like astraunuts loose muscle mass and have decrease bone density due to low gravity. Moreover, long term colonist may have to face health problems. On the hand, the reading covers that because of low gravity landing will be easy, less fuel will be used and more equipments will be taken in spaceship.
Secondly, the another topic for debate is the mining of valuable metals. The speaker points out that this is not the whole picture. When we mine metals in space, it will be more expensive. Furthermore, the target market will not be same as when supply increases demand decreases. While, the reading states that as asteroids are rich in gold and platinum, they will be of graet benefit to bussinesses related to them.
Finally, to wrap the things up the final point of discussion is feasibility to reach the asteroids. The lecturer suggest that it is no doubt correct that asteroids are easy to reach but may be they are not easy to to returun from. To add on, they have unusal patterns. Sometimes some of the orbital paths come close to earth but may travel further away and will be a great challenge to get back to earth. Nevertheless, the writer believes that they periodically come closer and so will be much feasible and and a chaeaper way to get and come back as compare to other planets.
