The passage posits that in an effort to encourage ecologically sustainable forestry practices, an international organization started issuing certifications to wood companies that meet high ecological standards by conserving resources and recycling materials. Companies that obtain this certification can lure customers by advertising their products. Many companies around the world have adopted to new practices in order to achieve this certification. However, there are few reasons that that wood companies in the United States will do the same.
Firstly, the passage states that these days there are enumerate advertising going on which do not interest the Americans anymore and so many products are labeled as new or improved to which they would not pay attention. In contrast, the author states that Americans would give importance to the certification and are able to recognize the difference between individual and international certified recognition.
In addition, to get these certifications it would require a lot more money and in turn these money would be accommodated to the original price of the product which would appear to be costly to the customer while the uncertified same product can be purchased at a lower price. While on the contrast the audio states that the customers would be mindful if there is a lot of price difference. The price after certification would be 5% higher and they would not hesitate to get a good certified product at a minimal difference in cost.
Furthermore, many argue that although it always makes good business sense for American companies to keep up with the developments it is not convincing and pursuing this certification would make sense only if they are exported abroad. Instead most of the items are consumed within the country where people are very much satisfied even without the certification whereas the author states that these days there is a lot of international trade
happening and if people inside the country doesn't purchase these quality products then the domestic companies outside would acquire and make use of them in international trade.
