It is stated in the reading passage that American wood companies are far from adopting new friendly practices to get eco-certification, which shows that the company meets highly ecological standards, like other wood companies around the world. The professor, on the contrary, believes that they will eventually seek eco-certification.
The first point the article states is the customer’s trust in the advertisements. Since American consumers have been exposed to advertisements too much, they do not pay attention to the eco-certification anymore. The professor contradicts this by saying that American people take the claims made by independent agencies serious and count them in. Thus, they will probably be interested in the products certified by those reliable agencies.
Next is the product price. According to the text, getting eco-certification will cost companies a lot so; these additional costs will have a negative impact on customers’ budgets. Thus, Americans will choose cheaper products. The speaker opposes this by explaining that price determines consumers’ decisions only if the price gap between the two products are high. Otherwise, American customers who are becoming interested in protecting the environment will purchase certified products.
Lastly, the author of the reading believes that American wood companies will not keep up with the rest of the world since they do not sell their products abroad. So, getting certificate does not make sense for them. In contrast to the passage, the lecturer points out that they should pay attention to foreign companies run in the USA besides international competence. Otherwise, they will lose their customers to foreign companies offering eco-certified products.
