The passage states that wood companies in America will not prefer to get their products certified as ecologically sustainable. The author of passage gives three reasons for it. Firstly, he states that Americans nowadays are not persuaded to buy products looking at advertisements, this is because many low standard products are also branded as new or improved. According to him, Americans will not even notice or give weightage to eco-certification label because Americans don't trust advertisements nowadays. The lecturer states that Americans don't treat all advertisements as one and same. They do believe and have confidence in claims made by independent agencies. So, lecturer says many ecologically minded Americans will purchase sustainable products.
Secondly, author of passage claims that price of such sustainable wood will be more than uncertified wood as company will pass on the cost incurred for business examination conducted by certification agency to consumers. American consumers are strongly motivated by good price. Author states that consequently wood companies will prefer to keep their product cost lower rather than to obtain certification. Lecturer has contrasting opinion; he states that although American's are money minded but this happens only when price difference between alternatives are very large. In case of certified wood and regular wood products, cost difference is less than 5 percent. In such scenarios consumers will consider other factors in addition to product cost to make decision. American consumers nowadays are giving importance to protecting nature and many consumers will buy ecologically sustainable wood products.
Thirdly, author claims that American wood companies need not keep up with other international companies as they do not sell their products abroad. He further asserts that American consumers are satisfied with the existing wood products available in market and companies need not pursue certification. Lecturer has contrasting view on third he suggests that domestic wood companies should keep up with international developments. He says so because domestic companies might lose out on customers who may prefer buying certified wood. Eventually foreign company may capture good amount of market share and this would harm domestic companies in long run.
