Essay topics: Hail—pieces of ice that form and fall from clouds instead of snow or rain—has always been a problem for farmers in some areas of the United States. Hail pellets can fall with great force and destroy crops in the field. Over the last few decades, a method of reducing hail, called "cloud seeding," has been tried. In cloud seeding, the chemical silver iodide is sprayed on storm clouds from an airplane. This makes the clouds produce harmless rain or snow instead of hail. Several pieces of evidence suggest that cloud seeding has been effective in protecting crops from hail.
Both the reading and the lecture discuss the effectiveness of using a technique called ‘cloud seeding’ to prevent Hail. The reading holds the view that the cloud seeding will work to reduce hail, but the professor opposed. He provides three refutations accordingly.
In the first place, the passage suggests that successful experiment supports the idea of cloud seeding is effective. However, the professor disagrees with the author. He explains that although it is true that the technique helps to create snow, the technique can result in draw if it is used to the cloud which does not rain. In other words, cloud seeding does not work well as expected. Consequently, the first theory is not convincing.
Secondly, the reading states that the cloud seeding works well in some Asian countries, so it can be effective in other places. Nevertheless, the schooler seriously challenges it by mentioning the experience will not be repeated. He further explains that the high-level of air pollution facilities the success of the cloud seeding because the chemical interacts with cloud seeding. That is, the cloud seeding will not work well in the fields in the United States because they are unpolluted.
Last but not least, the author contends that cloud seeding will work well because a local study proves its effectiveness. Again, the speaker deputes the third theory by arguing that the result of the study comes from the nature variation rather than the cloud seeding. Actually, the hail damage was reduced not only in the area the author mentioned, but also in the surrounding areas. Thus, the recused hail damage has nothing to do with the cloud seeding.
