Four-day Workweek advantages and disadvantages
The reading and lecture both discuss about the effects of introducing a four-day workweek in United States. The author of the reading feels that there are several benefits to such an arrangement and discusses three of them. The lecturer challenges the benefits stated by the author. He is of the opinion that a four-day workweek has disadvantages will I will explore in the below essay.
To begin with, the author states that decreasing the work time of an employee for a docked pay would actually be beneficial for the company in terms of profits earned. The article mentions that in doing so, the employees will be relaxed and less errors which require expensive handling will not be required. This specific point is challenged by the lecturer. He argues that hiring more workers won't necessarily benefit the company. In fact, additional costs incurred for the training of new workers and providing them with health benefits will be much larger. Additionally, he says new employees will require more office space and equipments like computers which will in turn be reduced from the company's overall profits.
Secondly, the writer suggests that hiring of new workers will assist in reducing the unemployment rates of the country. In the article, it is said that if employees start working a four day workweek, some of their workload can be given to a newly hired employee. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that the companies will be highly reluctant to hire new employees because of the additional costs as stated in the above paragraph. And as a result, the existing employees will be forced to work overtime to complete their work share. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that the company might expect the employees to complete a five-day task in four days. This would really turn the tables around and make the conditions unpleasant for the existing employees.
Finally, the author posits that individual employees will be more beneficial as a result of a four-day workweek. This is because in exchange of less salary, they get more time to explore. They could spend this free time to improve their quality of life. In contrast, the author posits that having a four-day workweek is not free of risks. And this would hamper the employee's quality of life especially if we talk about job stability and career advancement options. He notes that, in case of an economic crisis, these employees will be the first ones to lose the job over a full-time working employee. Also, when it comes to promotion, the employees who work for five days will be preferred as they can provide consistent supervision. As a result, this will also negatively affect the career of a four-day working employee.
So to conclude, the lecturer is of the opinion that a four-day workweek will not make any profits for the company, increase employment rates or improve quality of life.
