The reading and the listening passages are both about prevention of birds injury. While the reading passage mentions three solutions that business can use to prevent birds injuries, the listening casts doubt on these three solutions.
The author of the reading states that one- way glass is a solution that could help birds not getting injuries by avoiding the glass. Also, it is mentioned that people in the building can see outside. The professor, however, contends that the reflex will work as a mirror. This a bad thing for birds because if the glass reflects a tree or sky, the birds will fly to them and that would not solve the problem.
In addition, the article says that painting colorful lines on windows would be a good solution since birds would avoid flying to them as well as a business would still be able to see through the opening. The lecturer, on the other hand, points out that birds will see the opening as holes, so they will fly to them. Also, if the opening were very small, the rooms in the building would be dark.
Finally, the writer mentions that companies could use the magnetic field as a solution. They can put a powerful electromagnetic that emit magnetic signals, so birds would avoid buildings because they have the ability to navigate in the right direction by using Earth’s magnetic fields. The professor rebuts this point by stating that it is true that birds use magnetic to navigate, but they use them to migrate or to travel a long distance such as from cold to a warm area. Moreover, they use only eyes and bright in short distance in cities. So, this is not a solution.
All in all, the lecturer debunks all three solutions.
