Hail—pieces of ice that form and fall from clouds instead of snow or rain—has always been a problem for farmers in some areas of the United States. Hail pellets can fall with great force and destroy crops in the field. Over the last few decades, a met

Both passage and lecture are about “cloud seeding” which is one of the ways to reduce hail-which destroy crops in the field by spraying silver iodide on the cloud. The passage thinks that cloud seeding is effective according to results of the experiments.Differently, the listening believes that cloud seeding is not efficient as a solution of disadvantages from hail.

To begin with, the author of the reading says that clouds seeding is beneficial by forming light snows instead of hails according to the laboratory experiments. However, the tutor in the audio rebuts that cloud seeding will reduce the total amount of water which comes from weathers such as rain. Furthermore, crops will be damaged by absence of water.

Second, the writer aims that in some part Asia cloud seeding was successful and guarantees that it will also happen in USA. But, the lecturer in the listening opposes by bringing the different conditions between the Asia urban and place of US where they are planning to have cloud seeding. The feature of cloud seeding where it happens well in the more polluted area will not be effective in the area of US since it is for protection of crops in field. Moreover, the area for the crops are not polluted enough to have cloud seeding.

Third, the author has a result of one study that the damage of the crops due to hail in the central United States was decreased than previous years. The speaker of the lecture claims that the benefit of the cloud seeding is only in the central US not in north, south, and east areas. In addition, reduced amount of damage from hail was not because of the cloud seeding but because of just natural weather variation.
