The main idea of both the reading and the lecture is about the effect of glassy buildings on birds. Although the reading mentions three solutions for solving the birds' problem when flying around towns and cities, the lecturer finds them ineffective and provides three counter reasons to refute them all.
To begin with, the reading states that one-side glass are practical since birds can see the outer layer of glass as an impediment and do not fly forward it. However, the lecturer explains that one-way glass reflects objects like mirror. For example, the one-way glass reflects the picture of sky or trees and birds conceive them as real objects and fly through them .Since birds cannot perceive mirror from regular glass, they are more likely to be harmed. Thus, they one-way glass is as harmful as regular glass.
Furthermore, the reading posits that using colorful stripes are effective since birds can see them and conceive them as barriers. The lecturer, on the other hand, denies this fact and states that what if birds understand unpainted areas of glass as holes and fly directly through them? Not only does this idea make injuries, but also if designers reduce the width between the painted stripes, the rooms will get darker and harder to bear for people. Therefore, this idea is not as practical as it seems.
Eventually, the reading talks about making use of magnetic field in the buildings to force birds to stay away from buildings. In contrast, the lecturer mentions that however it is true that birds utilize their natural ability to navigate using Earth's magnetic field, this is merely beneficial for them during long trips, for example, for migration from cold country to warmer one before winter. She adds that birds are less likely to exert this approach to find their way in short trips around the city. However, during short-distance migrations, they take advantages of either their eyes or brightness of sunlight to navigate and find their path. Hence, the idea of putting magnetic field around the buildings is not practical for saving birds from such injuries.
