Both the reading and the listening offers opposing views on the decline of the population of the yellow cedar trees. While the passage suggests some natural causes leading to the declination of the trees, the lecturer repudiates every fact of the article and makes more ratified points.
First and foremost, the passage mentions that decline in the yellow cedar trees is due to the attack of the insect parasite, the cedar beetle. It's larvae feeds on the wood of the tree, and due to the sustained attack by the beetles the number of the yellow cedar trees dropped by large number. On the other hand, the speaker refutes the point made in the reading, according to him the bark and leaves of the trees are resistant to the insect attacks as they are saturated with a strong chemical which is poisonous to the insects. Moreover, the insects attacked the trees which are already damaged and would have died eventually. Thus, the professor makes more substantial point.
Secondly, the article goes on by saying that another reason for the decline of the trees are the brown beers as they eat the bark of the tree. The bark contains as much sugar as the wild berries have. And aggressive feeding of the bark by the brown beer makes the tress weak and gradually the tree dies. On the contrary, the lecturer says that the trees are present in the mainland and the island of the northwestern North America and there are no beers in the island part. Still the number of trees are decreasing in that area too. Therefore, the point made in the article is nullified by the lecturer.
Lastly, the reading posits that due to climatic changes the root system of the tree is affected in a detrimental way. Earlier, the surface roots used to grow in the early spring but now it grows in the winter season. This change in the root growth has made it sensitive due to cold and this causes damage of the tree and is one of the cause of death. The professor contends that the trees growing in the lower elevation where the weather is warm are also declining same as the trees growing in the higher elevation where the weather is cold. So the weather is not impacting the population of the trees.
In a nutshell, both the reading and listening provides interesting facts regarding the topic, but the reasons given by the lectures makes the point made of the reading unsubstantial. Clearly the disparity exists between them, but the facts produced by the speakers are more valid.
