The reading and lecture are both about whether Robert E. Peary had reached North Pole. While the author of the reading argues that there are three evidences support the truth, the lecturer disputes the claims presented in the article. His position is that these evidences are not convincing.
According to the reading, a detailed investigation had been conducted by a committee from National Geographic Society. He notes that the committee agreed that Robert really reached the North Pole. The lecturer, however, asserts that the investigation is subjective. He points out that the committee is friend of Robert and he has received some money. Furthermore, the investigation only lasted two days. So, the investigation is full of bias.
Secondly, the author suggests that a recent trek supports the claim of Robert. He mentions that Peary could truly travel very fast. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that the two treks are quite different. Avery made the trek with less weigh because he could get food with help. Besides Avery had the trek in a favorable condition. However, the conditions of Peary were much bad, so he couldn't travel that fast.
Finally, the author puts forth the idea that the position of Peary could be calculated through the shadow shown in the photographs, which indicated he was in North Pole. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is that the technology used to calculation is not precise. And the camera Peary used could not focus, so it blurs the image. What’s more, the photograph fade with the time.
